Be SMART With Your 2023 Goals

I recently mentioned there are 6 reasons why people won’t make their goals in 2023. One of those reasons were GOALS ARE TOO GENERAL.

For example, a general goal might be “I want to lose weight this year” or “I want to get off my medicine” Now, in a sense these are good goals. The problem is that they are not SPECIFIC.

Speaking of specific, this is one of the key words in the acronym SMART which stands for

SPECIFIC

MEAUSUREABLE

ATTAINABLE

REALISTIC

TIMELY

Using this acronym is a great way to start the thinking process when you write out your 2023 goals. If we use SMART in the two goals mentioned above, they may sound like:

“I want to lose 15 pounds in 6 months” OR “I want to get off my blood pressure medicine by my next doctor’s visit in June.”

These two example are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time based.

Also, please be careful that your goals are realistic & attainable.  Wanting to lose 40 pounds in 6 months is specific and there is a time involved but it may be unattainable.  Just remember, whatever goal you pick, you want to be able to be to sustain this long-term.

Make 2023 a year to remember.  Start off with writing your goals down.  Use the SMART acronym and you’ll be on your way!
