Coaching is very nuanced and ever changing. Sure, the field is evolving and people are understanding more about what they want and how to get it. When it comes to exercise, everyone is different. We all learn in different ways and at different paces. One thing, however, remains the same, everyone at some point needs a voice of reason.
People do a great job of getting in their own way, myself included. The same holds true when it comes to exercise. Sometimes when people start on their fitness journey they get too far ahead of themselves. “The harder I work, the more I sweat, the faster I will get what I want.” They think they are playing catch up because in their eyes, everyone is so far ahead of them. This is so far from the truth. If you’re new to exercise or returning to a gym after being away for years there has to be a modest onboarding process. If you get too far ahead of yourself in the beginning you could pay the potential price of exhaustion, injury or being overly sore. All of which could put a bad taste in your mouth and you decide to quit.

A coach can provide a voice of reason during this time. There is an opportunity to slow things down and find a nice balance of learning and exercising. The more time you take building your foundation in the beginning, the more you can trust the house that you build on top of it. You may find yourself wanting to do what everyone else is doing but trying to do more to accelerate your progress in the beginning is never the answer. It’s also not the answer after years of consistent exercise. There will be ups and downs in your fitness journey. The objective is to aim towards consistent progress over time.
A voice of reason is also important for people who have been training for years. For example, a coach can offer ways to view a situation like why adding 5 pounds instead of 10 pounds to your next set is a smarter choice. A coach can spot fatigue, changes in exercise form or other indicators that may point to someone being at risk for injury. By doing our best to communicate and work with you we can help navigate questionable decisions and provide education on how to think about and execute your training. Be engaged, be involved, ask questions and most importantly, be consistent.
