Folate (or Folic Acid), a B-Vitamin, is the next supplement we’ll be looking at during our Heart Health Focus in February. Folate is typically recognized for its role in healthy fetal development.
It also offers benefits to our hearts as well. This essential nutrient can be found in eggs, beans and dark, leafy green vegetables. In regards to a healthy heart, benefits of Folate include:
•Reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease
•Red Blood Cell Formation
Folate can help minimize the levels of a particular protein in the blood. Over time, consistent high levels in the blood could lead to cardiovascular disease and potentially followed by heart attack or stroke. Folate helps to reduce those levels.

Folate is also involved in red blood cell formation. Red blood cells deliver oxygen to our organs and all around the body. It is important to note that low red blood cell count can lead to anemia (the body does not have enough red blood cells to adequately deliver oxygen to the body) which has strong links to heart failure.
For these reasons, Folate is vital to our health and function. It can be found in a well-rounded diet and can be supplemented for additional support if necessary. As always, seek the advice of your primary healthcare professional to see if supplementation would be beneficial and appropriate for you!
