Where should you start on your exercise journey?
What should you do?
How do you do it?
Picture yourself walking into a big, crowded gym full of people who so obviously know what they’re doing. You stare at the equipment and then decide you will just come back another day.
Having a coach in your corner can drastically change that narrative.
There are many benefits to having a coach. These benefits, however, are seen differently from person to person. Many people simply like being able to show up and be told what to do. They spend all day thinking and making decisions. The gym is one place where they can let someone else that they trust, take the reins. Coaching can remove the guesswork that you would have if you were on your own.
On our end as coaches, a benefit that we see is understanding when to push and when to back off. This is only one of the many ways that people benefit from having a coach. It’s important to understand that every day will not be the same. Some days you will not walk into the gym at 100%. Life happens. That’s where good coaching can come into play. A rough night of sleep or a stressful day at work can make you feel worn out. It is not smart to push past your limits on these days. Instead, smart coaching can facilitate the right amount of work and effort for you on the tough days. Conversely, you can work harder on the days that you feel at your best. The important part is that you showed up. Let your coach take it from there.
A coach’s understanding of when to push forward and when to back off is crucial. This stems from knowing who they are working with and how that person normally trains. From there, decisions can be made about what exercises will be done and in what capacity. The goal is to manage as many variables as we can to help ensure that person has a safe and appropriate training session for that day. Missing the mark can result in higher amounts of soreness, fatigue or potentially a higher risk for injury. Having a coach on your side can be an essential piece of your journey towards improved health and longevity.
