If you’re new to working out or have been doing it for some time, you might realize the importance of goal setting. When new people start at First Capital Gym, we are amazed at the number of people who do not have specific goals. Or if they have goals, they are real extreme. One of the acronyms that’s pretty popular but spot on is SMART.
SMART stands for:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-Based
When you’re looking at making goals, use SMART.
Out of all the components to SMART, we find people struggle with either Specific or Time-Based. All too many times, people will start with us with no specific goal. It’s usually very general like losing weight and/or feeling healthy. This is good but being more specific can be measured. In this example, being more specific like losing 20 pounds and getting off of blood pressure medicine is better.
Time-based is another one that gets confused. When you have an extreme goal like losing 50 pounds in 6 months, you might be setting yourself up for failure. Sure you see success stories of that happening, but in most cases it doesn’t. When people set goals that are hard to attain in a short period of time, many times that person quits. It wasn’t the goal, it was the time you gave yourself.
At First Capital Gym, we offer people a Strategy Session to help get them on the right path. At the end of the Strategy Session, the person has a more clear path to obtaining their goals. It’s the best way we found to get people started!
