It is fairly common that most adults do not meet their daily requirements for Magnesium. Many foods found in our diet contain high levels of magnesium including: almonds, spinach, cashews, and avocados. Magnesium, unlike Zinc which we recently discussed, needs to be consumed in larger amounts.
Typically, 100mg per day is a good place to be for the average adult but amounts of 200-300mg will certainly satisfy what your body needs and can use.
Other benefits of Magnesium also include bone health and formation, blood sugar control, heart health, and other events like anxiety and migraines. Magnesium deficiency is relatively felt in healthy adults even if an individual is slightly deficient. Older adults typically feel the effects of any deficiency. Certain medications and excessive consumption of alcohol can sometimes interfere with magnesium levels.
Magnesium comes in many supplemental forms including Magnesium Bisglycinate which is arguably the best and most effective form that you can buy. Supplementation may not be necessary but it could be a great addition to your dietary intake if you find it difficult to meet your needs. Typically, Magnesium will come in powder or pill form and that’s usually what most decent supplement companies will offer.
Tracking your calories and overall nutrition will give you a good idea of your daily intake. If your levels seem to be lower than what we discussed maybe a supplement is right for you! It can be a small addition, don’t rely on supplements to replace a good diet!
